Why a simple routine helps

A routine takes small healthy choices off your daily to-do list. Instead of deciding every morning whether to stretch or drink water, it just becomes “what you do after waking up.” Two parts of the day are especially worth anchoring:
- A steady wake-up time and bedtime. The CDC recommends going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, and turning off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed. That’s why the default evening routine includes a screens-off wind-down.
- A little movement every day. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults, such as brisk walking, and says it can be broken into shorter chunks. A short morning stretch or an after-dinner walk is an easy way to fit some in.
Tips for building your routine
- Start with three to five steps in each routine. You can always add more later.
- Give each step a realistic time, including a few minutes of slack.
- Prepare the night before: lay out clothes or pack lunch to make the morning easier.
- Keep weekends close to weekdays, especially your wake-up time.
- Track it for a few weeks with the Habit Tracker until it feels automatic.
