How to build a balanced plate

Harvard’s Healthy Eating Plate offers a simple guide you can use when filling in each meal:
½vegetables and fruit
¼whole grains
¼healthy protein
It also suggests drinking water, tea or coffee with little or no sugar, and using healthy oils such as olive oil. The NHS recommends eating at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.
Why plan meals ahead?
- Fewer last-minute decisions. You already know what’s for dinner.
- One shopping trip. Build the grocery list while you plan, so nothing gets forgotten.
- Less food waste. Buy what you’ll actually use.
- Easier balance. Seeing the whole week makes it easier to spot days with no vegetables or too many takeaways.
Tips for a plan you’ll stick to
- Start with dinners only, then add other meals once that feels easy.
- Cook once, eat twice: plan leftovers for the next day’s lunch.
- Keep one or two simple “backup” meals for busy evenings.
- Repeat meals you enjoy. Variety across the week matters more than a new recipe every day.
