Printable Habit Tracker: Free Monthly Template and How to Use It

A printable habit tracker is one of the simplest ways to stick with a new habit: one sheet, one tick a day. Below you’ll find a free monthly tracker you can print right now, the main types of tracker to choose from, and how to use one so it actually helps.

Key takeaways

  • Tracking works: a review of 138 studies found that monitoring progress helped people reach their goals, especially when progress was physically recorded.
  • Track three to five small, clear habits, not ten.
  • Keep the sheet where you’ll see it and tick it at the same moment each day.
  • A missed day isn’t failure. Just tick the next one.

Why a paper tracker helps

  • Tracking progress makes goals more likely. A 2016 review of 138 studies (nearly 20,000 people) found that monitoring progress helped people reach their goals, and that the effect was stronger when progress was physically recorded or shared.
  • It’s a visible reminder. A sheet on the fridge prompts you every time you see it.
  • It shows patterns. After a couple of weeks you’ll see which days you usually miss, and can plan around them.
  • It carries you through the slow part. In a UCL study, new habits took an average of 66 days to feel automatic. A tracker keeps you going until then.

How to use your tracker: 6 steps

1. Choose three to five habits

Fewer habits are easier to keep up. Mix one or two easy wins with one habit that stretches you. Need ideas? See our list of 50 healthy habits.

2. Make each one a clear yes or no

“Exercise more” is hard to tick. “Walk for 10 minutes” isn’t. Write the smallest version that still counts.

3. Link each habit to a cue

Attach each habit to something you already do: “after breakfast, I’ll walk for 10 minutes.” This is called habit stacking.

4. Put the sheet where you’ll see it

The fridge, the bathroom mirror or next to your bed. Keep a pen with it.

5. Tick at the same time every day

Straight after the habit, or at one fixed moment, such as before bed.

6. Review at the end of each week

Count your ticks, notice where you missed and adjust. Our weekly wellness check-in walks you through it. For more tips, read how to track habits without giving up.

Common questions

How do I use a printable habit tracker?

Write three to five clear habits down the left side, put the sheet somewhere you’ll see it, and tick a box each day you complete a habit. Review your ticks once a week and adjust anything that isn’t working.

Do habit trackers really work?

Tracking helps. A review of 138 studies published in Psychological Bulletin found that monitoring progress made people more likely to reach their goals, especially when they physically recorded it.

How many habits should I put on my tracker?

Three to five. More than that is hard to keep up, and you can add new habits once the first ones feel automatic.

What should I do if I miss a day?

Leave the box empty and carry on the next day. Research on habit forming found that missing one day doesn’t significantly affect progress. Try not to miss two days in a row.
